About Colors

Color names come from all over: maroon traces back to the French word for chestnut, magenta was named after a battle fought in Italy in 1859, and turquoise means "Turkish" because the stone reached Europe through Turkish trade routes. Others borrow straight from the natural world, like coral, peach, olive, and lavender. This card mixes the six colors of a basic paint set with shades such as beige, indigo, teal, and crimson, so callers can hold up a swatch instead of reading the name aloud.

Elementary teachers and art instructors reach for this during a color-mixing or vocabulary unit, when students are ready to name shades beyond the primary set.
