About Pirates
Real pirates worked the shipping lanes of the Caribbean and Atlantic, most famously between the 1650s and the 1720s. Many crews signed written articles setting out shares of plunder and payment for injuries. A black flag like the Jolly Roger was a threat meant to persuade a merchant ship to surrender without a fight. Practical gear fills this card: a compass and spyglass, a lookout post in the crow's nest, and Spanish silver coins that were cut into eight pieces to make change.
Call the squares for a group at a themed birthday party, a library reading program, or a classroom afternoon during a unit on ships and exploration.
