About Colors

Sunlight splits into a band of color when it passes through a prism, and six of the names on this sheet (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet) mark that band in order. Others come from the things that first carried them: lavender from the flowering herb, turquoise from a blue-green stone, crimson and scarlet from prized dyes. Black and white sit outside the rainbow entirely, and gray falls between them. Magenta and indigo round out the list.
