About Space

Space begins about 62 miles up, where the air thins past the point of lift and flight gives way to orbit. Everything on this page belongs to that territory: the frozen dust and ice of a comet, the collapsing gas of a nebula where stars form, the rings of Saturn made of countless chunks of ice. Mercury, closest to the Sun, keeps a cratered surface much like the Moon's, because neither holds an atmosphere to wear those scars away.

Reach for this during an astronomy or solar system unit, or the week a launch or eclipse has students asking questions.
