About Emotions
Psychologists often group feelings into a small set of basics that show up on faces around the world, including joy, sadness, anger, fear and surprise, then treat the rest as blends and shades built on top. Pride and shame arrive later in childhood because they depend on comparing yourself to others. Gratitude and hope point outward and forward. Naming a feeling precisely is itself a skill: the difference between worry and fear, or calm and numb, changes what you do next.
A counselor, teacher or parent working on feelings vocabulary with kids who are still learning to say what is going on inside.
