About Pirates
Piracy peaked in the Atlantic and Caribbean in the early 1700s, when crews seized cargo ships carrying sugar, cloth and coin. Real pirate ships ran on rules: crews voted on their captain, split shares of any prize by agreement, and posted a lookout high on the mast to spot sails first. A galleon was a heavy Spanish trading vessel, a prize worth chasing. Buried treasure and walking the plank come mostly from later fiction, though the compass, spyglass and anchor here were standard gear.
Reach for this sheet during a unit on the Age of Sail, or on a rainy afternoon when a young reader has just finished Treasure Island.
