About Trains
Trains run on a simple idea: steel wheels on steel rails create so little friction that one locomotive can pull a mile of loaded cars. Everything else on this sheet supports that idea. A trestle carries track across a valley, a tunnel carries it through rock, and a junction lets two lines meet without a collision. Signals hold trains apart by distance, the conductor runs the train, and the engineer operates the locomotive itself.
Reach for this page when a class is studying transportation, westward expansion, or how a town grew up around its depot.
