About Trees
Trees fall into two broad camps on this list. Pine, cedar, and spruce are conifers, carrying needles and cones and holding their foliage through winter. Oak, maple, birch, and the rest are broadleaf trees that drop their leaves each fall. Redwood grows taller than any other living tree, while aspen spreads by sending up new stems from a shared root system, so a whole grove can be a single organism. Hawthorn stays small and thorny, often planted as a hedge.
Reach for this sheet during a unit on plant life cycles, forests, or leaf identification, or before a walk where students name the trees they pass.
