About Phonics
Phonics teaches the link between letters and the sounds they stand for, so a reader can sound out a word never seen before. The terms on this card are the working vocabulary of that instruction: onset and rime split a syllable at the vowel, a digraph is two letters spelling one sound as in the CH, SH, and TH squares, and silent E stretches a short vowel into a long one. Segmenting pulls a word apart into sounds; blending pushes them back together.
Reach for this during a small-group reading block or a tutoring session when students need to hear and name the parts of a word out loud.
