About Sight Words
Sight words are the words that show up most often in print, and many of them refuse to follow the usual spelling rules. You cannot sound out "said" or "was" or "could" and arrive at the right answer, so readers learn to recognize them instantly instead. Teachers have organized lists like these for decades, and the words on this card, from "the" and "you" to "because" and "should", make up a surprising share of any page a beginning reader picks up.
