About States
The fifty states joined the Union across more than 170 years, from Delaware in 1787 to Alaska and Hawaii in 1959. This card mixes the giants with the small: Texas and California hold the largest land area and population in the lower 48 group here, while Vermont and Maine sit at the northeastern edge. Hawaii is the only state made entirely of islands. Ohio, Iowa, and Nebraska anchor the farm belt; Nevada and Arizona hold desert.
