About Football

American football is played on a 100-yard field marked every five yards, which is why the old nickname gridiron stuck. A touchdown counts six points, a safety counts two, and possession changes hands if the offense cannot gain ten yards in four downs. The quarterback calls the play in the huddle from a playbook that can run hundreds of pages, then the two lines meet at the line of scrimmage. Officials wear striped shirts so players spot them fast.
