About Olympics
The five interlocking rings stand for the inhabited continents joined in competition, and the flame that opens each Games is kindled in Olympia, Greece, then carried by relay to the host city. The modern Olympics began in Athens in 1896, and events on this card trace back to those early programs: the marathon, the discus, the pole vault. When a sprinter takes the top step of the podium, officials play the anthem of the winner's country while the flag rises behind.
Reach for this card during a summer or winter Games broadcast, or in a classroom unit on world geography and track and field events.
