About Kindergarten

Kindergarten means "children's garden" in German, a name Friedrich Froebel chose for the school he opened in the 1800s to teach young children through play, song, and blocks. Much of that plan survives in the day this crossword describes: a rug where the group gathers, a cubby with a coat hook and a name tag, safety scissors with rounded tips, and time outdoors. Clues here cover the routines, supplies, and shapes of a first school year.

Reach for this sheet when a family or classroom is getting a five-year-old ready for the first day, or when an older student is looking back at how kindergarten works.
