About Vocabulary
English words are built like machines: a root carries the core meaning, a prefix bolts on at the front, a suffix at the back. Knowing that "port" means carry unlocks import, export, and portable at once. This crossword works through the vocabulary of vocabulary itself, the terms teachers use to talk about words: synonyms and antonyms, homonyms that sound alike but part ways in meaning, idioms whose sense refuses to add up from their parts, and the thesaurus and glossary you consult when memory runs short.
Reach for this during a language arts unit on word study, or as review before a spelling and vocabulary test.
