About Valentines Day
Valentine's Day falls on February 14 and is named for Saint Valentine. The custom of exchanging written valentines grew popular in the 1800s, when cheaper postage and printed cards let people send lace-trimmed paper hearts through the mail instead of delivering them by hand. Classrooms picked up the tradition with decorated shoeboxes and cards for every classmate. The squares here gather that mix: mailboxes and postage stamps, doilies and glitter, cupids with arrows, and the friendship and hugs behind them.
