About Football
American football is played on a hundred-yard field marked every five yards, which is why the game picked up the nickname gridiron. A touchdown counts six points, a safety two, and the offense gets four downs to gain ten yards or hand the ball over. The clues here cover scoring, positions, equipment and officiating, from the huddle that sets a play to the punt that gives it up. PIGSKIN survives as slang even though modern balls use cowhide.
Reach for this sheet during football season, in a classroom or at home before kickoff, when someone wants the vocabulary that goes with the game.
