About Olympics

The modern Olympic Games began in Athens in 1896, reviving a festival held in ancient Olympia centuries earlier. The five interlocking rings, adopted in the early twentieth century, stand for the inhabited continents joined in competition. Athletes still run the marathon, throw the javelin and clear hurdles, while winter programs added sports like the luge, raced feet first on a small sled. Winners hear their national anthem from the top step of the podium.

Reach for this during an Olympic year, when a class or family is following the events and wants the vocabulary of the Games at hand.
