About Phonics

Phonics teaches that letters map onto sounds in patterns a reader can learn and reuse. English has 26 letters but roughly 44 phonemes, so single letters team up: two letters spelling one sound make a digraph, as in ship, while a blend keeps both sounds audible, as in stop. Readers segment a word into its parts, decode each one, then rebuild it. Practice turns that slow work automatic, which is what teachers mean by fluency.
