About Weather

Weather is the atmosphere's short-term behavior, and most of it comes down to heat, moisture, and pressure moving air around. Thunder is the sound of air expanding explosively after a lightning stroke heats it, which is why you hear it after you see the flash. A barometer tracks air pressure, and a falling reading often warns of a storm hours ahead. A monsoon is not a single rainstorm but a seasonal reversal of prevailing winds that soaks whole regions for months.

Reach for this during an earth science unit on the atmosphere, or on a rainy afternoon when the sky outside is doing the teaching.
