About Fish
Fish breathe by pulling water across gills, and most steer with fins while a swim bladder holds them at depth. The names hidden here cover a wide range: salmon travel from rivers to the ocean and back to spawn, flounder and halibut lie flat on the bottom with both eyes on one side of the head, and sturgeon carry rows of bony plates instead of ordinary scales. Others, like guppies and goldfish, are freshwater fish familiar from home aquariums.
Reach for this page during a unit on ocean life, freshwater habitats, or animal classification, or before a trip to an aquarium.
