About Graduation
Graduation ceremonies borrow their look from medieval universities, where scholars wore long gowns and hoods against cold stone halls. The flat cap with a tassel came later, and moving that tassel from one side to the other marks the moment a degree is conferred. Academic stoles and cords signal honors societies, service, or a field of study. Processions usually enter to "Pomp and Circumstance," an Edward Elgar march first played at an American commencement at Yale in 1905.
Reach for this page during end-of-year assemblies, senior week, or the quiet stretch between rehearsal and the actual ceremony.
