About Summer

Summer in the Northern Hemisphere begins at the solstice in late June, when Earth's tilt points the north pole most directly toward the sun and daylight stretches longest. Heat lags behind that peak, so July and August usually feel hotter than June. The season sets its own routines: sunscreen reapplied every couple of hours, watermelon that is mostly water, fireflies flashing coded signals after dusk, a lifeguard scanning a crowded stretch of sand. Even the sandals and the hammock answer to the temperature.
