About Autumn

Autumn arrives when shorter days shut down the green pigment in leaves, letting the yellows and oranges already in them show through, while maples build red pigments on top. The same cue sends birds south and sets squirrels burying acorns and chestnuts, most of which they never dig up. Cranberry bogs flood for harvest, squash and pumpkins come off the vine before hard frost, and the first cold nights turn cider from a fall drink into a reason to stand near a bonfire.

Reach for this sheet in a September or October classroom, or at a kitchen table on the first weekend cold enough for a sweater.
