About Winter

Winter in the Northern Hemisphere begins around December 21, the solstice, when the sun sits lowest in the sky and daylight runs shortest. Cold air holds less moisture, so snow crystals form in the clouds and fall as flakes, each one built on a six-sided structure. Frost appears when water vapor freezes directly onto cold surfaces. A flurry drops little; a blizzard needs strong wind and blowing snow that cuts visibility for hours.
