About Snow
Snow forms when water vapor freezes directly into ice crystals around a speck of dust high in a cloud. Those crystals grow six arms because of the way water molecules bond, which is why a snowflake has six sides and not five or seven. Temperature and humidity shape each one as it falls. On the ground, snow shifts fast: a flurry, a drift piled by wind, powder good for skis, then slush. This grid holds terms for the storm, the cleanup and the fun.
Reach for this page on a snow day, or during a winter weather unit when the forecast is doing the teaching for you.
