About Cinco De Mayo
On May 5, 1862, a Mexican army under General Ignacio Zaragoza held the city of Puebla against invading French forces that badly outnumbered them. The win did not end the war, but it became a lasting symbol of resistance, and the city of Puebla still marks the date with parades, uniformed reenactors and mariachi. In the United States the holiday grew into a broader celebration of Mexican American heritage, especially in California and Texas. Note that Mexico's independence day falls in September.
Reach for this in early May, when a class or family is sorting out what the date actually commemorates.
