About Earth Day

Earth Day began on April 22, 1970, when millions of Americans turned out for teach-ins and rallies about air and water pollution. Within a few years the United States had an Environmental Protection Agency and laws protecting clean air and clean water. The date still anchors tree plantings, river cleanups and school projects across more than a hundred countries. Solving these clues means thinking about compost piles, wetlands and windmills, the ordinary machinery of keeping a planet livable.

Reach for this sheet in the weeks around April 22, when a science or social studies class is talking about conservation and needs something to take home.
