About Halloween

Halloween falls on October 31, the eve of All Saints' Day, and much of what it looks like now came over with Irish and Scottish immigrants in the nineteenth century. Back home they carved turnips into lanterns; in North America the pumpkin was bigger, softer, and everywhere in autumn, so it won. Trick-or-treating spread across American neighborhoods in the 1930s and 1940s. Owls, bats, and spiders got their reputations from being active after dark, when the rest of us are not.

Reach for this in the last weeks of October, when a class or a family gathering needs something quieter than sugar.
