About Fourth of July

On July 4, 1776, the Second Continental Congress approved the Declaration of Independence, and the thirteen colonies it spoke for still show up as the thirteen stripes on the flag. Congress made the day a federal holiday in 1870. The bald eagle in these clues comes from the Great Seal, adopted in 1782. Other answers belong to how the day is kept now: parades down main streets, fireworks after dark, sparklers, bunting on porch rails, and picnic tables loaded with watermelon.

Reach for this sheet in late June, when a class or a family is talking about where the holiday came from before the first fireworks go up.
