About Memorial Day

Memorial Day honors Americans who died in military service, a distinction that sets it apart from Veterans Day. It grew out of Decoration Day, when communities gathered after the Civil War to place flowers on soldiers' graves, and Congress later fixed it to the last Monday in May. At Arlington National Cemetery, small flags go up at every headstone. At three in the afternoon local time, the National Moment of Remembrance calls for a pause, often marked by a bugler sounding Taps.

Reach for this in late May, when a class or family wants the meaning behind the long weekend before the grill gets lit.
