About Valentines Day
February 14 honors Saint Valentine, an early Christian martyr, though the day's link to romance grew mostly from medieval poetry and later from the custom of exchanging written notes. Cupid arrives from Roman mythology, where the god of desire carried a bow whose arrows caused sudden love. Mass-produced greeting cards trimmed with paper lace turned the holiday into a stationery event in the 1800s, and boxed chocolate followed soon after. Anonymous signatures remain part of the tradition.
Reach for this in early February, when a class or a family wants something to work through together before the cards go out.
