About Colors
Color names come from all over: crimson and scarlet trace back to dye trades, magenta was named after a battle fought in Italy, and turquoise borrowed its name from the stone. Others point straight at an object, like olive, lavender, teal, and charcoal. Newton's work with a prism showed that white light splits into a spectrum, and painters still mix from a palette built on primary hues. This crossword works through those names and the vocabulary around them.
Art teachers introducing color theory, and anyone who wants the names behind the shades they already recognize.
