About Travel

Travel runs on paperwork and timing as much as on scenery. A passport gets stamped at customs, a boarding pass gets scanned at the gate, and a layover can mean forty minutes of sprinting between terminals or eight hours with a book. Jet lag comes from crossing time zones faster than your body clock can reset, which is why an eastbound flight usually hurts more than a westbound one. Ferries, motels along the highway, a compass, a folded atlas: every mode leaves its own trail.

Reach for this in a geography unit, on a rainy afternoon before a trip, or during the long wait at the gate.
