About Fairy Tale
Fairy tales traveled by mouth long before anyone wrote them down. Charles Perrault set French versions on paper in the 1690s, the Brothers Grimm gathered German tales in the early 1800s, and Hans Christian Andersen invented his own, including The Little Mermaid. The same pieces resurface across languages: a cursed object, a warning ignored, a task repeated three times. Scholars sort thousands of these stories into types, tracking a single plot across continents.
Reach for this alongside a unit on folklore or a shelf of retellings, when students already know the stories and want to see the pattern behind them.
