About Groundhog Day
Every February 2, a crowd gathers before dawn at Gobbler's Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to watch a groundhog emerge and supposedly forecast the season. The custom traces back to European midwinter weather lore that German settlers carried to Pennsylvania. Groundhogs, also called woodchucks, are true hibernators: their heartbeat and body temperature drop sharply through the cold months while they wait out winter in a burrow. The shadow rule says six more weeks of winter if the sky is clear.
Reach for this in late January or early February, when a class or a family is marking the holiday and wants something to work through before the sunrise broadcast.
