About Hanukkah
Hanukkah marks the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem after the Maccabees reclaimed it, and the holiday begins on the 25th of Kislev on the Hebrew calendar. Its eight nights are counted by the menorah, whose ninth candle, the shamash, lights the others. Oil runs through the traditions: latkes fried in a pan, jam-filled sufganiyot, and the story behind the lamp itself. Clues here cover the dreidel letters nun and gimel, gelt, blessings, and the meaning of dedication.
Reach for this in December when a class, a family table, or a religious school group wants the vocabulary behind the candles.
