About Labor Day

Labor Day lands on the first Monday in September, and it began as a workers' holiday: labor unions organized parades in the 1880s to show the public how many people kept the country running. Congress made it a federal holiday in 1894. The three-day weekend now marks the unofficial close of summer, with picnics, barbecues and the old custom of putting away white clothes. This crossword works through the terms behind the day off, from wages and strikes to the parades themselves.

A teacher planning the first week of the fall term, or anyone filling a quiet holiday morning before the grill gets lit.
