About Mothers Day
Anna Jarvis campaigned for a national day honoring mothers after her own mother died, and in 1914 President Woodrow Wilson set it on the second Sunday in May. Jarvis chose the carnation, her mother's favorite flower, as its emblem. She later objected to how quickly florists and candy makers took the day over. Grandmothers, stepmothers and the neighbor who acts as a second mom get celebrated too, often with breakfast in bed or a macaroni necklace.
Reach for this in the first week of May, when a class or a family is making cards and wants something to work on together.
