About New Year
January 1 became the start of the year under the Gregorian calendar, though many cultures mark the turn on other dates entirely. In New York, a lighted ball has descended in Times Square since 1907, counting the final seconds. Scotland's Hogmanay carries its own customs, including first-footing, where the first visitor after midnight brings luck to the house. Noisemakers, confetti and resolutions all share one purpose: marking a boundary between what happened and what comes next.
A teacher or family planning something for the last week of December or the first days back in January.
