About Ocean
The ocean covers most of Earth's surface and holds about 97 percent of its water. Sunlight reaches only the top few hundred feet, so the drifting plankton that feed nearly everything else stay near the surface, while trenches plunge deeper than any mountain stands tall. The Pacific alone is wider than every landmass combined. Tides rise and fall because the moon's gravity tugs the water, and a single dolphin may travel dozens of miles in a day following food.
Reach for this during a marine biology or earth science unit, or on the drive home from an aquarium visit.
