About Pirates
Much of what people picture as piracy comes from novels rather than court records. Walking the plank appears almost nowhere in the historical accounts, while marooning, leaving a sailor on a bare spit of sand, was a genuine punishment. Blackbeard, born Edward Teach, blockaded Charleston harbor and died in battle in 1718, near the close of the era historians call the Golden Age of Piracy. A doubloon was real Spanish gold, and a galleon carrying it across the Caribbean made a slow, heavy target.
Reach for this when a lesson on Atlantic trade, the Caribbean colonies, or Treasure Island needs a companion sheet that separates the legends from the record.
