About Birds
Birds are the only living animals with feathers, and the group ranges from hummingbirds that beat their wings dozens of times per second to penguins that use their wings as flippers underwater. The names hidden here cover several ways of making a living: ospreys and eagles hunt with hooked beaks and talons, woodpeckers hammer into bark for insects, flamingos filter tiny food from shallow water, and vultures clean up carcasses. Owls hunt largely by sound, and many finches and sparrows crack seeds.
Reach for this during a backyard birding unit, a spring migration lesson, or the quiet stretch after a nature walk.
