About Cinco De Mayo

On May 5, 1862, a Mexican force led by General Ignacio Zaragoza held off a larger, better-equipped French army at Puebla. The victory did not end the invasion; French troops took Mexico City the following year. But the stand at Puebla became a symbol of resistance, marked today with parades and memorial events in Puebla itself and across the United States, especially in cities with deep Mexican American roots. It is not Mexican Independence Day, which falls on September 16.

Reach for this in early May, when a history or Spanish class is separating the Battle of Puebla from the myths that have grown around the date.
