About Valentines Day
February 14 honors St. Valentine, an early Christian martyr, though the day's link to romance grew much later in medieval Europe, where poets tied the date to the season when birds pair off. Handwritten verses gave way to printed cards in the 1800s, and heart-shaped boxes of chocolate followed. Cupid, borrowed from Roman mythology, arrives with his bow. Classrooms now trade valentines by the handful, where friendship counts as much as romance.
Reach for this in the first weeks of February, when a class is decorating envelopes and filling out cards for everyone on the roster.
