About Fourth of July

On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia. Congress made the day a federal holiday in 1870. The flag on this sheet carries thirteen stripes for the original colonies and fifty stars, a count set in 1960 when Hawaii joined. The bald eagle has appeared on the Great Seal since 1782. Other words here come from how the day is spent: parades, picnics, bunting on porches, and fireworks after dark.

Reach for this in late June or early July, when a classroom, library, or family gathering wants something tied to the holiday.
