About Earth Day
The first Earth Day took place on April 22, 1970, when millions of Americans joined rallies and teach-ins calling for cleaner air and water. Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin helped organize it, and the surge of public attention that followed contributed to the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency later that year. Earth Day is now observed in countries around the world, with tree plantings, river cleanups, and habitat restoration projects. A wetland filters water; a glacier stores it for centuries.
Reach for this in the weeks around April 22, when a class or a family is talking about what conservation actually protects.
