About Civil War
The American Civil War began in 1861 with the bombardment of Fort Sumter and ended four years later when Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomattox Court House. It was fought over slavery, and its end brought emancipation for roughly four million enslaved people. The names on this grid range across battlefields like Antietam and Gettysburg, the units and equipment soldiers carried, and figures including Abraham Lincoln, Harriet Tubman, and Frederick Douglass, whose writing and speeches pressed the cause of abolition.
Reach for this sheet when a middle school class is working through the 1860s and needs the key names and terms fixed in memory before a unit test.
