About Solar System
Eight planets circle the Sun, and the four nearest it (Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars) are small rocky worlds, while Jupiter and Saturn are giant balls of gas with ring systems and dozens of moons apiece. A belt of asteroids sits between Mars and Jupiter. Pluto was counted as the ninth planet until 2006, when astronomers reclassified it as a dwarf planet. A meteor is the streak of light you see, not the rock itself; craters mark where such rocks have landed.
Reach for this sheet during an astronomy or Earth science unit, when students are learning the order of the planets and the vocabulary that goes with them.
