About States
The fifty states joined the Union across more than 170 years, from Delaware in 1787 to Alaska and Hawaii in 1959. Their names come from many sources: Colorado and Nevada from Spanish, Ohio and Kansas from Indigenous languages, Vermont from French words for green mountain. Sizes vary enormously, with Alaska larger than Texas, California, and Montana combined. This grid hides eighteen state names, spanning the Sonoran Desert of Arizona to the rocky coastline of Maine.
Reach for this sheet during a geography unit on United States regions, or while students are memorizing states and capitals.
